Choosing the Right Pair

Match the Glove to the Job

Daily commute and office wear. A fleece-lined nappa pair in black or brown. Slim enough to look sharp, warm enough for the walk from the car or station.

Driving. Unlined lambskin or nappa. Thin leather, knuckle vents, close fit. You should be able to feel the wheel through the glove.

Serious cold. Sheepskin or thick wool-lined gloves. Prioritise warmth over slimness. If your hands run cold, consider mittens; they are warmer than gloves because they keep your fingers together.

Casual and weekend. Brown or tan leather in deerskin or suede. A more relaxed texture that suits jeans and casual jackets.

Pick Your Colour

Black is the most versatile. It works with suits, overcoats, casual jackets and everything in between. If you own one pair, make it black.

Brown is the natural partner for tan shoes, brown belts and earth-toned outfits. It sits more casual than black and looks better with lighter clothing.

Get the Size Right

Measure your dominant hand at its widest point, just below the knuckles, excluding the thumb. Note the measurement in inches. That number is your glove size. Most men fall between size 8 and 10.

If you are between sizes, size down. Leather stretches across the palm within the first few wears. A glove that feels snug on day one will fit perfectly by the end of the first week.

Leather Types

Not every leather feels the same or serves the same purpose. Here is what to expect from each:

Nappa (goatskin). Smooth, fine-grained, dressy. The most popular leather for men's gloves. Takes dye well, resists scuffing, and strikes the best balance between softness and durability.

Lambskin. Thinner and softer than nappa. Gives the closest, most second-skin fit. Ideal for driving gloves and lighter styles. Less rugged than thicker hides.

Sheepskin. The full hide with natural wool attached on the inside. The warmest leather by a clear margin. Thicker and more robust than lambskin.

Deerskin. Soft and pliable with a visible grain and a more casual, rustic character. Naturally abrasion-resistant and handles moisture better than most leathers.
